MARIAN HYLAND

My practice centres around the relationships of space, shape, and colour, created through the interplay between drawing, painting, and collage.
The process of mark making and layering—shaped by observations of natural environmental processes, such as textures and marks left behind through decay or neglect, industrial architecture and landscapes, and random associations of objects and surfaces—is a central element of the work.
Paintings evolve intuitively to find rather than make the image. Layers are continually built up and simplified until the composition settles into a cohesive whole. The aim is for each piece to offer a sense of surprise to the artist, with the hope that viewers will connect with the painting in their own way, while it still retains a sense of mystery and intrigue.
